The FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund has announced grants for 31 additional community-based education organizations across 18 countries, significantly expanding its mission to improve educational opportunities for children in underserved communities. The latest round of funding increases the total number of supported organizations to 58, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to ensuring that the legacy of the FIFA World Cup extends beyond football and into long-term social development.
The announcement was made during the “No Child on the Sidelines” pledging summit in New York, where new financial commitments pushed the fund’s total contributions to US$60 million. The initiative is designed to support grassroots organizations that combine education with sports, health, nutrition, and community engagement to create lasting opportunities for young people worldwide.
Strengthening Access to Education Through Sport
The FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund was formed to capitalize on the worldwide popularity of football to help solve one of the biggest problems in the world today – inequality in access to good education. Instead of concentrating exclusively on educational programs in classrooms, the fund helps out NGOs that use sports as a means of education.
These recently chosen groups work in areas where education still poses a challenge because there are places in which fewer than 15 percent of children finish high school, and more than 60 percent live below the poverty line. The fund seeks to make education better and create a better learning environment for kids through such investments..
$60 Million Raised Through Global Partnerships
A major milestone for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is its achievement of raising more than US$60 million in commitments within just over a year of its launch. The funding has come from governments, philanthropic organizations, corporations, sporting events, and individual donors.
Some of the more recent contributors include the governments of Canada, Portugal, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy. Corporations that are contributing to this campaign include Fox Corporation, the FIFA Foundation, the Varkey Foundation, Deloitte, and many others.
Besides this, money earned from large sporting tournaments such as the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 and FIFA World Cup 2026 is being utilized towards educational campaigns across the globe.
Supporting More Than 400,000 Children
Due to the new grants, it is expected that the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund will help more than 400,000 children worldwide. There are various services that are provided by these organizations, such as good education, after-school education, development through sports, nutrition, health care services, and community activities.
Not going for any blanket solution but rather giving power to local organizations who understand what their community really needs is the way of working of this fund. Through this grassroots effort, educational solutions can be made according to the local conditions.
Building a Lasting FIFA World Cup Legacy
This initiative is aligned with FIFA’s wider plan of ensuring that the FIFA World Cup brings about benefits even after the last whistle blows on it. By integrating education in addition to football, the organization is trying to show how large-scale sports can be used as a vehicle for making development happen across the world.
FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is also aligned with international programs aimed at advancing quality education and equal educational opportunities for kids, especially those from regions with poor access to education. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 fast approaching, the fund has become one of the most notable social impact programs of the tournament.
Looking Ahead
The extension of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is yet another major step towards the integration of the power of world sports into the realm of education. The fact that this fund supports 58 organizations in different parts of the world, thus raising more than $60 million for their support, proves that partnerships are an effective tool to fight against educational disparity.
With more and more partnerships emerging before the FIFA World Cup 2026, the fund will become even more globally extensive and, thus, guarantee that the most prominent football tournament leaves a legacy not only in terms of sporting results but also in terms of education.
