A group of UK universities has come together to support international students whose academic ambitions were disrupted by recent visa restrictions introduced by the British government. Through a new initiative led by the charity Mosaik Education, funded postgraduate opportunities are being offered to students from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, and Cameroon who were unable to obtain UK study visas following the government’s “visa brake” policy.
The move reflects a growing effort within the higher education sector to ensure that talented students affected by geopolitical crises and immigration policy changes can continue their education. By expanding, participating institutions hope to maintain access to quality education through alternative learning pathways.
What Triggered the Visa Brake?
These visa restrictions were implemented by the UK government on March 26, 2026, in order to stop the study visa applications from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Sudan, and Cameroon temporarily. As per the UK government officials, the main reason for implementing this policy was that there was a 470% increase in asylum applications from the applicants belonging to these four countries from 2021 to 2025. The estimated number of study visas that would not be issued because of this policy is 4,300 according to the UK government’s impact assessment.
However, although this policy helps in improving the immigration policies of the country, it has a great impact on students who have qualified for universities and UK student scholarships.
Universities Step In with Alternative Learning Opportunities
In order to deal with the widening educational divide, nine universities have committed to supporting the Mosaik Scholarship project. Among those universities are the University of London, University of Leicester, University of Northampton, University of St Andrews, University of Salford, University of Cardiff, University of Aberystwyth, King’s College London, and Birkbeck, which are providing a total of 19 scholarships.
Unlike traditional campus-based programs, these UK student scholarships will mainly be conducted using online learning and TNE (transnational education). This is because it enables students to obtain UK degrees without physically moving, making it one of the only possible solutions for students constrained by visa policies.
Protecting Access to Higher Education
TIn addition, visa limitations interfered with access to existing scholarship programs such as the famous Chevening Scholarship, whereby about 50 students annually from the affected nations attended their postgraduate studies in the UK.
Mosaik Education has come up with a Global Response Platform to bring together universities, humanitarian agencies, and educational establishments. The objective of this initiative is to find out students whose studies have been disrupted due to war or change in policies and match them with UK student scholarships. Education campaigners feel that universities have an obligation to make sure that political decisions do not disrupt the academic career of a student
