Key Background :
Santander US's latest $25 million initiative represents a major milestone in its devotion to access to education, employability, and entrepreneurial support. Centered on this funding is a solid emphasis on scholarships and grants through its Santander Universities scheme. These funds target the dismantling of financial barriers for students and institutions focused on upskilling the next generation workforce.
It will be using Santander Open Academy—a free, open-source e-learning platform available around the world. It will offer students and professionals access to high-quality material, from academic courses to job-readiness skills training, at no cost. It is an indicator of a move towards democratizing knowledge in the more digital age.
Christiana Riley emphasized the critical role that companies need to take in this learning revolution. She cited that by investing in individuals' learning paths, organizations can not only facilitate individual achievement but also overall economic development.
Supporting this campaign is the "Tomorrow's Skills" global report, which identified an increasingly widening gap between what the education system was preparing students for and the needs of the workplace. The report indicated that while numerous graduates were ready to start their careers, they felt threatened by the need to remain competitive. Continued learning was important to almost 80% of US respondents. Affordability was, however, the most significant barrier, and a clear majority supported the corporate world taking greater responsibility in ensuring ongoing education.
Santander's educational efforts are not new. It has assisted millions of students and collaborated with more than 1,000 universities worldwide during the last 28 years. In 2024 alone, it assisted over 2 million individuals through scholarships, training, and entrepreneurial assistance programs.
This longstanding commitment shows Santander's strategic emphasis on access education and skills development for the future. The new investment is not merely monetary—it is a more comprehensive vision to empower people, transform the workforce, and provide equal access to opportunity in an innovation- and change-led world.
