Apple delays Siri’s AI-powered upgrade to March 2026 to improve quality and reliability.
The update will include screen-aware responses, contextual actions, and document-based interaction.
Key Background :
Apple first teased its smarter Siri vision at WWDC 2024, promising a revolution in voice assistant capabilities. The feature was set to make Siri contextually smart with the ability to know what it can do inside apps by taking into account what is on the screen and even reading pictures of documents for direct action. The features initially were set to ship sometime in late 2025, along with the iPhone 16.
But development turned out to be more difficult than anticipated. Apple pushed the launch to March 2025 under the guise of further calibration. Craig Federighi, in WWDC 2025, revealed that their first AI model was uneven and inaccurate as per Apple's standard. Greg Joswiak agreed that releasing poor experience prematurely would ultimately prove to be more devastating than beneficial. Their words captured Apple's cautious step of releasing AI tools that will not undermine user trust.
Insiders currently await the Siri update coming with iOS 26.4, in March 2026. As much as this is Apple's standard mid-cycle update timing, it puts users and developers through almost two-year delays from announcement to getting the new features promised. This is significant when the competition is already shipping next-gen AI assistants.
Despite the letdown, Apple has proceeded with other AI-driven features of iOS 26. These include a new interface, real-time voice call translation of languages, and personalized emojis (Genmoji) created under the control of generative AI. Apple also gave extensive developer access to AI models, though these are seen as smaller in nature.
Apple’s decision to publicly acknowledge the Siri delay is rare and signals the company’s prioritization of quality, privacy, and trust. Still, the delay raises concerns over Apple’s ability to compete in the AI space as rivals continue to gain ground. The eventual success of Siri’s AI overhaul will likely determine Apple’s standing in the evolving AI landscape.
