Heritage Academy of Learning Excellence has served students with language-based exceptionalities for more than three decades. The school was founded in 1989 in response to a growing reality faced by many families. Bright and capable children with dyslexia were struggling in traditional classrooms, not due to a lack of intelligence, but because conventional systems did not understand how they learned.

The school was founded by Louise Brazeau Ward, whose vision was shaped by her experience advocating for her younger son, who is profoundly dyslexic. After repeatedly encountering limited support and low expectations, she became determined to create an environment where students with dyslexia could thrive. She believed these students did not need simplified learning. They needed explicit, structured, and multisensory instruction delivered in a setting that respected their intelligence and potential.

In 1995, her daughter, Cheryl Ward, joined the school after studying education and psychology. Since then, she has witnessed the lasting impact of the founding vision on thousands of students. From the beginning, the mission was clear. The focus was to teach students with dyslexia how to read and write effectively while rebuilding confidence that had often been eroded by years of frustration. That commitment has remained unchanged.

What has evolved is a deeper understanding of the whole child. Over time, the school recognised that language-based learning differences often coexist with challenges related to attention, executive functioning, anxiety, and emotional regulation. Today, Heritage Academy supports students with Dyslexia, Specific Learning Disorder (Reading, Writing and Mathematics), ADHD, ASD Level 1, and related learning differences from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Its mission now extends beyond academics to include emotional resilience, independence, and self-advocacy, while maintaining the belief that students succeed when they feel seen, respected, and capable.

Phonemic awareness is taught explicitly using tools such as the Heggerty program, particularly in the early grades.
